During my time as a graduate student at Penn State, I was invited to contribute to the Routledge Handbook of Tennis edited by Robert J. Lake. The Handbook was published in 2019 and includes some 45 chapters exploring the history, culture, and politics of the sport of tennis. It was nominated for the annual Anthology Award from the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH).
Written together with my graduate advisor, Mark Dyreson, “From Folk Game to Elite Pastime: Tennis and its Patrons” concerns the history of sponsorship and patronage that allowed tennis to develop as a sport from its medieval roots to the present day.
You can learn more about the Handbook on the Routledge website.
